JACK & KIM

A Tapestry of Two Generations: The Rennie Wedding.

Every wedding dress tells a story, but some get to tell a sequel. When Kim and Jeanette first chatted with Patti and myself, the vision was clear: we weren't just creating two distinct, original garments for a beautiful wedding. We were weaving a family's history into the very fabric of the day by repurposing the delicate heirloom lace from Jeanette’s original wedding gown.

To take a piece of a mother’s past and breathe new life into her daughter’s future is the ultimate honor for a designer, requiring a delicate balance of technical precision and deep emotional intuition.

The journey to create Kim’s dream gown actually began in the hands of a dear friend, Patti Baxter, who had originally been asked to make the wedding dress. However, in an unexpected turn of events, Patti suffered a serious fall. Recognizing that she wouldn't be able to finish the garment in her condition, the project was lovingly handed over to me to complete. Taking over another maker's canvas is always a profound responsibility, but stepping in to support a friend and ensure a bride's dream stayed on track gave the project an even deeper sense of purpose.

The creative challenge ahead was beautiful in its complexity:

For Kim (The Bride): The goal was to seamlessly integrate the vintage lace into a completely modern, original custom silhouette that reflected her unique personality. It needed to feel fresh, elegant, and entirely hers, whilst carrying that subtle, romantic heartbeat of her mother’s gown.

For Jeannette (Mother of the Bride): Her dress needed to be a celebratory masterpiece of its own. By echoing elements or complementary textures of the original lace in Jeannette’s new formal attire, we aimed to create a sophisticated, tailored look that honored her role on this spectacular day while allowing her to feel radiant and comfortable.

With the design direction set and the legacy lace carefully prepared, the physical transformation began. Traditional couture dressmaking is a slow, deliberate art.

Because we were working with a finite, irreplaceable piece of heirloom lace, there was zero room for error. Every motif from Jeanette's dress had to be strategically placed on Kim's gown and veil to maximize its natural beauty, contour the body perfectly, and flow effortlessly into the new fabrics. Hours were spent hand-pinning and appliquéing individual lace fragments onto the new illusion tulle and structural layers.

Concurrently, Jeanette's Mother of the Bride dress took shape. The design focused on flawless tailoring, sophisticated lines, and a color palette that perfectly complemented Jeanettes complection wedding's overall theme while beautifully harmonizing with Kim's bridal look.

The most rewarding phase of any custom design journey is the fitting process. Watching the construction move from structured mock-ups to the final, flowing garments is pure joy. For Kim and Jeanette, the fittings weren't just about adjusting a hem or tightening a seam; they were emotional milestones. Seeing the heirloom lace beautifully reimagined on Kim for the first time brought the entire journey full circle.

The final results were two entirely original, custom-made creations: a breathtaking, modern bride carrying a piece of her mother's love down the aisle, and a proud, elegant Mother of the Bride wearing a design that subtly celebrated her own history.

It was a beautiful reminder of why we create formal wear by hand—not just to make beautiful garments, but to capture a moment in time, rally together through unexpected challenges, and wrap a family in love.

To Kim and Jeanette—thank you for trusting me with your family's precious memories, and to Patti, for trusting me to bring the vision across the finish line.
